well, hello there <3 i'm julie, a vertically-challenged insomniac who is obsessed with a fairly long list of things. these things may include, but are not limited to doctor who, torchwood, firefly, star trek, and many things tolkien (meaning, yes, the hobbit and the lotr but also the rest of the legendarium, and roverandom and the like as wel ). also spiders, inverts and other beautiful creatures of all sorts. um. so basically, look for those things on this blog, as well as a bunch of other random stuff that isn't on the list. thanks, love you, don't hesitate to drop something in my ask!

Yay Canto II part II! Sorry for the long wait, friends.

Here is a recording of me reading the second half of the second Canto of JRR Tolkien’s “Lay of Leithian”, as published in The Lays of Beleriand. Naturally, the voice is mine, the words are Tolkien’s and the property of the Tolkien Estate.

Notable Things about this half of this Canto:

  • Oh! I forgot to mention earlier that ‘Beren’ was originally ’Maglor’.
  • Also, in this lay, Finrod is referred to only as ‘Felagund’ wherever he appears. ‘Finrod’ is the name used to refer to his father Finarfin
  • Speaking of Finrod/Felagund, the part was originally written as ‘Celegorm’ before being amended
  • On one draft of this Canto, Tolkien had bracketed out the lines “Thus Morgoth loved that his own foe / Should in his service deal the blow / That punished the breaking of his word”, but CS Lewis disagreed with the omission, and Christopher Tolkien chose to keep it
  • ‘The Burning Briar’ refers to the same constellation that is also called ‘The Sickle of the Gods’ or ‘The Great Bear’

Canto II (Part 1)

Here it is, finally. The first half of the second Canto of Tolkien’s ‘Lay of Leithian’ as published in the Lays of Beleriand. I have a pretty sore throat at the moment, so that’s why I decided to split this Canto up into two halves. The second should be posted later this afternoon or this evening. There’s this awkward stutter at the very end of this recording, sorry bout that, will possibly fix it later (not any time soon, probably, as I still haven’t re-recorded the first Canto, but so it goes). Once again, obviously, the voice is mine, the words are the brainchild of JRR Tolkien and the property of the Tolkien Estate.

Notable things about this half of Canto II:

  • You’ll notice that the treachery of Gorlim is much more….well, treacherous in this poetic version of the Lay. here he actively seeks out Morgoth in order to betray Barahir and Company as opposed to his less-active role in the prose telling.
It may be that we fled from the fear of the Dark, only to find it here before us, and nowhere else to fly to but the Sea.

Sador, The Children of Húrin, JRR Tolkien

Isil was first wrought and made ready, and first rose into the realm of the stars, and was the elder of the new lights, as was Telperion of the Trees. Then for a while, the world had moonlight, and many things stirred and woke that had waited long in the sleep of Yavanna. The servants of Morgoth were filled with amazement, but the Elves of the Outer Lands looked up in delight; and even as the Moon rose above the darkness in the west, Fingolfin let blow his silver trumpets and began his march into Middle-earth, and the shadows of his host went long and black before him.

The Silmarillion, J.R.R. Tolkien

there’s nothing like warm summer nights and the words of Tolkien and that feeling that you sometimes get that this must be the first time the moon has ever risen and that all the night flowers that have never bloomed before must be unfurling for the first time to make you feel at home wherever you are.
